TIFF & DRM Content Security |
|
TIFF is a preferred archival format because it is an
open format. TIFF files can be read and modified by a
host of applications from many different vendors. For
content security, TIFF is not the best choice for the
same reason above.
One way to secure TIFF files (restrict printing,
copying, editing, etc) is to deploy a DRM (digital
rights management) system like those available from
Sealed Media,
Liquid Machines, or
Authentica. TIFF files are wrapped with an
encryption package that is decoded once the user is
authenticated by the system. A TIFF viewer is launched
under strict control by those systems to grant user
rights to view, print, copy, resave, etc.
Adobe and Microsoft offer rights management systems
(policy servers) for their formats (Adobe
Security for PDF files and
Microsoft RMS for MS Office files). Informative
Graphics and Liquid Machines provide format extensions
to Microsoft's RMS solution.
Informative Graphics also offers a simple non-server
rights management solution for protecting TIFF content
and distributing with security protection (i.e.,
restrict print, copy, editing, etc). Unlike the more
sophisticated (and more expensive!) digital rights
management systems, this solution protects on a file
basis, not an individual user basis.
By creating a CSF (content sealed file) in Brava Desktop
from the TIFF file, an non-editable and accurate
rendition can be distributed with embedded security
applicable to all users of that file. CSF files can be
created to disable printing, copy, measure, etc. The
files can be pre-dated to expire, require a password,
and include burn-in watermarks, print banners,
redactions, and/or annotations. To extend this security
to specific user rights, Informative Graphics partners
with Sealed Media and we offer an integration to
Microsoft's RMS policy server.
